I am greatly inspired by this magnificent and beautiful grooggs man whom i keep in my dreams and find inspirational while writing my novels, KREES and YEWFRO about the struggle of young men and children who strive to get by on a daily basis with potato farming.

Jim (James J) is my great, great uncle & I am proud and honoured to say he is a member of my family. Much respect must go to the site admin for the maintenance of a well kept & nicely informed site. Just one thing though, my daughter (his great, great, great niece) is doing a school project on his career and we cant find a standing shot of him with the title belt, if the admin could upload one to gallery that would be great!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say how much of an iconic figure Jimmy is to me. A beacon of hope for me in many ways. As an Irish immigrant in a foreign country, both the story & film gives me a pride & strength- Jimmy's fighting spirit you could say. What a fighter?

I watched cinderella man and found so inspirational. My mother rarley talked about the hard times of the 1930's but i read up on its hardships and felt for james. He was a humble and hardworking family man. I respect that.

Actually, this may be just a little early for logigng on Outer Island. The first record I've found of logigng there is about six years later, in 1884. However, the government did make sure the keepers had a good supply of firewood: the light station boundaries were drawn large enough to encompass sufficient timber for the keepers' use. Since these tracts were not subject to commercial logigng, the lighthouse reservations now contain some of the oldest forest in the Apostles. (Think of those awesome pines on the trail to the Sand Island light.)

I read the book shortly afer seeing the movie. Both were outstanding, with the book's ability to dig deeper with detail (describing how boxing was HUGE in the first half of last century, etc).
If this country continues its slide into another Great Depression-type era, it would behoove many to watch the movie or read the book for inspiration on coping, finding the strength to look forward, etc. Great stuff!
