I've been a boxing fan all my life. I'm the grandson of Billy 'the kid' Lacey, an undefeated welterweight who fought out of Erie, PA back in the 20's. My grandfather was the finest man I've ever known. I remember his huge hands, the hands of a fighter. Unbelievably large knuckles. Always a scratchy stubble of beard. He wore his loving Irishman heart on his sleeve. Always greeting us with a great big bear hug and a scratchy kiss. My grandmother wouldn't let him turn pro because she "didn't want to be married to a man with cauliflower ears." My grandfather played drums in local bands and worked at the local paper mill. He bundled huge pallets of paper for 30+ years. Never saw a doctor in his life. He passed away quietly in his sleep in 1988. Ron Howard and all involved with this movie, THANKS for bringing back the memories of my grandfather for me. I'm 46 years old sitting hear misty-eyed while I type this. Not grieving, but gratefully reminiscing.

This story shows the power that freedom has....a great man like Mr. Braddock can touch the hearts of millions. He was just a simple man that wanted to take care of his family. This wonderful movie shows how anyone in a free society can persevere and become an inspiration to so many people

Im proud to be an irish- american! This movie is just touching and i feel like i should be a better person and be more like JJB.

I just watched the movie and all I can say is WOW! Kudo's to Mr. Howard for keeping the movie so true to life. Thank you for allowing so many of us to share in the memories of your father! Although I am to young to have experienced the depression, I heard stories from my grandparents and I have the utmost respect for all who made it thru. Your father and mother truly were wonderful Role Models! I just wish we had more of them around today. I am so glad that I saw this movie!

I also would like to know if the turtles are true? If it is what a wonderful sentiment!

Again, Thank you for sharing your father with us all!

I'm 57 years old and my grandfather on my mom's side was 100% Irish born in 1900. Before he was a coal miner he was an aspiring boxer (middleweight). When I was a kid he'd frequently speak of many boxers but seemed often to glowingly mention James J. Braddock. Of course at the time I didn't appreciate his comments. As a result of visiting this Web site and seeing the movie "Cinderella Man" with Russell Crowe I wish I could have back those precious moments with my granddad so we could talk more about his experiences, those times and James J. Braddock.

I just watched the newly released DVD of James J Braddock. Until tonight, I had never heard of him. This was one of those nights that I wish my grandmother or grandfather were still alive to tell me what it was like to be there during those times and how they stuck together as Mr. Braddock and his wife did. Those two are the epitome of what family is about and what we have forgotten as a nation. Your family has my utmost respect for now and always. Thank you for sharing your story with the world.

Happy holidays for many years to come!

Inspiring story and a great movie. My dad was Irish Catholic from N.J. and was 5 years younger than Braddock. He was one of his biggest fans and admirers. I heard many stories of the great JJB growing up and knew the story line very well. Ron Howard as usual does a great job.

Max Baer was not treated fairly in the movie. In truth he was a showy but decent man and the death of Frankie Campbell in the ring haunted him for years. His KO of Nazi fighter Max Schmeling while wearing a Star of David on his trunks is one of boxings greatest stories. After Frankie's unfortunate death, Baer financially supported the Campbell family and put his children through college.

Hello there- I just finished watching The Cinderella Man- I have to say that I admire your mother, Mae, as much as your father. Both were very determined to hold their head up high, and keep going- even when the odds had them down. She stuck by your father, when - truely, most women now a days wouldn't. But she came from a time that you did stick, too bad this world didn't all watch this and see what it takes to make a true family.I will always remember how your folks pulled thru their tough times and stayed together. I loved the fact of the "turtles"- did that really happen? Must have or they wouldn't put it in there. Well, God Bless you and yours thru this holiday season and beyond!

I am a very big boxing afficionado and had known the story of James J. Braddock but to have seen it reportrayed on film and in stunning manner was something else. I saw it at the movie theatre 5 times and just bought the DVD and continue to tear up everytime. Going through that time period and being downtrodden but never giving up hope and keeping family together through love and a will to win. James J. Braddock is a REAL man's man. He is not just Cinderella Man, he is an American Hero forever. Thanks Jim Braddock, you make me proud to be from New Jersey! God Bless you and the Braddock family!
